US youngsters are too fat to fight, warn generals →

If worried parents, dieticians, general practitioners, heart & plastic surgeons and even sports bodies can’t change a society’s attitude to their children’s health, call the army.

“And there you have it: a cuddly duck based on a fearsome Nazi, gently taunting the technological refuseniks who wouldn’t stump up for the next generation in colour TV.”

…from an article on how, in the ’50s, the US TV companies used Disney content as the colourful carrot to encourage take-up of colour TV’s. While today TV companies face the same consumer reluctance to complete the digital switch.

Stefan Sagmeister speaks in a TED lecture about taking time off to re-charge the creative batteries.

"Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.
Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country."
